Adam’s Angels tallied a 6-4 victory over Seattle Snide in the opening game of the University of Louisville baseball program’s 2022 Pizza Bowl series Tuesday evening at Jim Patterson Stadium.

Tuesday night was the first in a seven-game series between the two teams, named in honor of former Cardinals and now MLB players Reid Detmers and Drew Ellis.

Runs were hard to come by early on Tuesday as Greg Farone and Tate Kuehner matched zeros through the first three innings.

The Angels finally broke through in the fourth, with Christian Knapczyk opening the frame with a leadoff double. Isaac Humphrey followed with a run-scoring single and later scored the second run of the inning.

Seattle Snide got a run back in the fifth on a RBI knock from Haven Mangrum that plated Michael Lippe, but the Angels responded with a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh.

Will Cook and Noah Smith singled home runs in the sixth, while Knapczyk and Humphrey did the same in the seventh.

Korbyn Dickerson singled home Mangrum in the eighth to get Seattle back within four before the game got interesting in the ninth.

Seattle loaded the bases with one out, bringing the potential tying run to the plate. Following a strikeout, back-to-back walks forced in two runs to cut the margin to two but a fielder’s choice ended the comeback threat.

Knapczyk led the way offensively for both teams, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs. Humphrey, Smith, Mangrum and Dickerson all added two hits of their own.

Farone allowed just one run on two hits in 4.1 innings. Kuehner surrendered three earned over 5.2 innings. Garrett Schmeltz, Ryan Hawks and Alex Galvan turned in scoreless outings out of the bullpen.

The 2022 Pizza Bowl continues on Wednesday with game two. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.

ABOUT THE PIZZA BOWL

Upon his hiring as Louisville head coach in the summer of 2006, Dan McDonnell immediately created an atmosphere of competition throughout the Cardinals baseball program. Whether it’s through conditioning in the Omaha Challenge, or in preseason scrimmages, McDonnell creates competitive situations to give his players numerous opportunities to prepare for what they will see during conference and postseason games.

One of the most effective ways McDonnell and his coaching staff can provide the Louisville players with those competitive, game-like situations is through the annual Pizza Bowl series. Following approximately six weeks of fall practice sessions, the Cardinals take to the field for what started as a one-game scrimmage in the fall of 2006 and has become an ultra-competitive series. The Pizza Bowl series has become an exciting and highly anticipated ending to the fall for Louisville coaches, players and fans.
