Freshman Nina Nicosia’s goal in the 21st minute served as the equalizer as University of Louisville women’s soccer and No. 16 Michigan finished in a 1-1 tie at Lynn Stadium on Friday night.
Louisville is now 4-1-1 on the season following the tie, while Michigan moves to 5-1-1.
“That’s a really good team and we’re very young, so that was an awesome experience for us,” said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. “I’m proud of the way we responded after a poor first half, especially in those two overtimes. I felt like we took a giant step forward today.”
The Wolverines got on the board in the 19th minute when Danielle Wolfe sent the ball to Raleigh Loughman and her cross found the foot of Nicki Hernandez, who one-timed it into the back of the net.
Less than two minutes later, the Cardinals’ Nicosia provided the equalizer. She went one-on-one with several Michigan defenders, created some room and her left-footed shot bounced into the goal off the right cross bar to even the match at 1-1.
After both teams got on the board in the first 21 minutes, the remainder of the match went scoreless despite both teams having several chances.
The story for the Cardinals was the play of Gabby Kouzelos, who kept the Wolverines off the board in the final 90 minutes of action. She finished with seven saves, just three off her career high, and two of her saves came in the final overtime.
“I don’t even question anything Gabby does, she’s outstanding. She’s actually mad she gave up the first goal and that was a pretty good goal,” added Ferguson-Dayes.
Michigan finished with 24 shots, but just eight were on goal, while Louisville had six shots with four on goal.

Louisville now gets a week off prior to opening Atlantic Coast Conference play at Miami next Friday night.
