Heading into a Week 4 matchup against Ball State, WKU Football has the opportunity to make further strides in executing the offense. Coordinator Junior Adams and quarterback Mike White are intent on doing just that.
A key to being successful against the Cardinals’ defense will be neutralizing the nation’s most productive pass rusher. Senior Anthony Winbush leads all of FBS with 6.5 sacks through the first three games. He had 3.0 in the opener at Illinois, 1.5 vs. UAB and then 2.0 last week vs. Tennessee Tech, forcing three fumbles in the process.
“Pass protection is important every week, to keep our quarterback clean,” Adams said. “They have a good defensive end who we know about. But part of it isn’t just the front, it’s the running backs helping out and the wide receivers getting where they’re supposed to be when they’re supposed to be there. It takes all 11 guys.”
White agreed, “It’s a group effort, we definitely aren’t pointing fingers at anyone. It’s something we have to get better at as an offense … We’re working their butts off every single day. We’re not taking a rep off in practice. We want to get better and we’re working really hard to get there.”
After season lows of seven points on 238 yards at Illinois on Sept. 9, the Hilltoppers posted season highs of 151 rushing yards and 377 total yards against Louisiana Tech. Through the air specifically, White completed a season-high 71.4 percent (25-of-35) passes.
Also, The Hilltoppers had a 34-to-26 edge in time of possession, the first time they had won that battle through the first three games. Overall this year, 6-of-8 touchdown drives for WKU have elapsed at least 3:30, while 4-of-8 have gone over 70 yards.
“We want to control time of possession, especially by running the ball and putting together long drives,” Adams said. “We pride ourselves on that and it keeps the defense off the field.”
