A goal with less than three minutes left in double overtime handed the University of Louisville men’s soccer team a 2-1 loss at Saint Louis in Thursday’s season opener.

With the game level at one through 107 minutes, a foul outside the box on the left flank gave Saint Louis (1-0-0) a free kick opportunity. The curled service found the head of Simon Becher who was able to flick it into the back of the net for the golden goal.

The goal was the second of the night for Becher, who gave the Billikens the early advantage just over two minutes into the match. The first goal, also a header, came off a corner kick.

After falling behind 1-0, Louisville (0-1-0) found its footing and controlled possession for much of the first half. However, the Cardinals managed just two shots in the first 45 minutes and trailed by a goal at the break.

Early in the second half, SLU appeared to have a clean opportunity inside the box, but Detre Bell charged off the line and made a sliding deflection to keep the deficit at one.

Louisville equalized in the 64th minute. Pedro Fonseca took possession of the ball just outside the top of the 18-yard box, dribbled once to his right and blasted a shot into the upper left corner.

The Cardinals kept their foot on the pedal and managed a few more attempts at goal, but the match remained even at one and proceeded to overtime.

Saint Louis had a free kick attempt from 20 yards out midway through the first extra period that amounted to nothing and Sander Roed nearly ended things in the 98th minute as he rang a long distance shot off the crossbar.

Neither side could find the breakthrough in the first overtime session, sending the game into the final period and the ultimate winner.

Shots were even at 10 apiece on the evening. Bell made the only four saves of the match.

Louisville will open the home portion of its schedule on Monday against Evansville in the first of four consecutive matches for the Cardinals at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
