Thomas More WTEN Triumphs over No. 11 Seed Shawnee State

Thomas More University’s women’s tennis team showcased their skills and determination on Thursday (April 20) by defeating the No. 11 seed Shawnee State with a sweeping 4-0 victory. This impressive win propels the Saints into the Quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament. As a result, the team’s overall record now stands at 9-8.

Doubles Domination

The doubles round was a testament to the Saints’ prowess on the court. First-year players Alexis Covington (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) and Heidi Kane (Gilford, Ind./East Central) were engaged in a tight battle against Claire Carruthers and Lacey Urban, with the match left unfinished at 4-3.

The sophomore duo of Noelia Martinez Garcia (Santander, Spain/IES Las Llamas) and Dakota Schroeder (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecaneo) outperformed Antonia llea and McKenzie Harman with a decisive 6-1 victory. Senior Kimberly Sabga (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago International School of Port of Spain) and junior Cassie Saner (Independence, Ky. Simon Kenton) closed out the doubles round on a high note, conquering Brooklyn Foose and Lexy Urban 6-1.

Singles Success

The Saints continued their winning streak in the singles matches. Alexis Covington claimed victory over Lacey Urban with a solid 6-2 and 6-2 performance. Dakota Schroeder and Claire Carruthers’ match ended unfinished at 6-1 and 5-2.

Noelia Martinez Garcia demonstrated her skill by shutting out Antonia IIea with a flawless 6-0 and 6-0 victory. Cassie Saner and Lexy Urban’s match also concluded unfinished at 6-4 and 3-2. Heidi Kane and McKenzie Harman’s match followed suit, ending at 6-1 and 3-2 unfinished.

Kimberly Sabga rounded off the singles matches with a commanding 6-2 and 6-1 win against Brooklyn Foose.

The Saints will return to the court tonight (April 21) to face the No. 3 seed Campbellsville (Ky.) in the Quarterfinals of the MSC Tournament. The match will take place in Bowling Green, Ky. The team’s recent success has undoubtedly boosted their confidence, and they will look to carry that momentum into the next round.
