Murray State’s baseball team split their doubleheader against Evansville on Sunday, with the Purple Aces claiming victory in game one, 6-3, before MSU triumphed in game two, 10-3.

Game One Recap: Strong Hitting Efforts Not Enough for MSU

In the first game, Brennan McCullough and Cade Sammons led the Racers with three hits each. Sammons secured the only RBI of the game for MSU, while two more unearned runs completed their scoring. Logan Bland and Dustin Mercer added to the team’s efforts by each picking up a hit and scoring a run at the top of Murray State’s order.

On the pitching front, Alex Elsing delivered his second consecutive strong appearance, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out a batter.

Game Two Recap: Racers Bounce Back with Dominant Performance

The second game saw the Racers turn the tables, putting together a dominant performance with 10 hits. This brought their total to 30 for the series, alongside a stellar outing from Cade Vernon. Vernon’s best appearance of the season saw him pitch 6.2 innings, allowing only one run and achieving five strikeouts against the Purple Aces.

Charlie Corum and Drew Vogel each had a three-hit day, contributing a double and three RBIs apiece. Corum also reached base two more times on walks. Mercer smacked a double and scored two runs, while Bland earned a hit, two walks, and scored three runs. Carson Garner contributed with two hits and two RBIs, and Sammons secured a single and an RBI in the final game of the weekend.

Murray State will return to action at Johnny Reagan Field on Tuesday, hosting a nonconference game against North Alabama at 5 p.m. The Racers will look to build on their impressive offensive performance from the doubleheader and continue their strong season.
