Thomas More University Baseball Splits Double header with WVU Tech

Thomas More University’s baseball team split their double header between WVU Tech on Sunday (Feb. 6) with the scores of 1-2 and 5-3. The Saints overall record improves to 2-2.

Game 1: WVU TECH 2-1

  • Junior Jacob Caruso (Rootstown, Ohio/Rootstown) grounded out to the shortstop, sending in first year Gavin Vogelgesa (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) to score for an RBI.
  • WVU Tech scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to secure their win over the Saints (2-1).

Game 2: Thomas More 5-3

  • In the bottom of the first inning, senior Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) singled to left field to send in senior Casey Nowak (Burlington, Ky./Covington Catholic) to get the Saints on the board (1-0).
  • WVU scored on run in the top of the 2nd, 4th, and 5th inning (1-3).
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, senior Aiden Reverman (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) hit a sac fly in the infield to score Caruso to put the Saints down by one (2-3).
  • Sophomore Brady Baldock (Burlington, Ky./St. Henry) would continue the scoring for the inning by scoring on a wild pitch to tie things up (3-3).
  • Nowak would hit a single through the right side to score senior Brett Benzinger (Taylor Mill/New Richmond) and sophomore Gavin Pearson (Burlington, Ky./Cooper) to give the Saints the go ahead lead (5-3) in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Game 1:

  • Caruso had one RBI.

Game 2:

  • Nowak was 2-4 at the plate and had two RBI’s and scored one run.
  • Baldock was 2-3 and scored one run.
  • Martin was 1-2 and had one RBI.
  • Benzinger was 1-2 at the plate and scored one run.

Game 1:

  • Sophomore Landen Scott (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up no earned runs off of three hits and struck out four.
  • Sophomore pitcher Zach Dugan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched 0.1 innings, giving up two earned runs off of one hit.

Game 2:

  • Sophomore pitcher Mason Berger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up two earned runs off two hits and struck out seven.
  • Junior pitcher Hunter Nantz (London, Ky./North Laurel) pitched 1.0 inning, giving up one earned run off two hits and struck out one.
  • Junior pitcher Justin Bierbaum (Bridgetown, Ohio/La Salle) pitched 1.0 inning, giving up no runs and no hits, and struck out two.
  • First year pitcher Austin Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) got the save pitching the final inning, striking out three batters in a row to secure the Saints win.

Next up, the Saints open their home season at the Florence Y’alls on Feb. 11 with a double header against Ohio Christian starting at 12:00 pm ET.
