On Tuesday 6′ 9″ Trey Lyles, the number 1 ranked player in the Hoosier State, and the number 8th ranked player in America according to Rivals as well as the number 2 Power Forward, committed to Kentucky and Coach John Calipari.
Lyles, who hails from Indianapolis and a Arsenal Tech High School had his list down to two schools, Louisville and Kentucky. Coincidentally the last two National Champions and with high profile and successful coaches in a state were basketball is king. Lyles made his decision live on ESPNU at 12:50 pm and announced,” Next year, I will be playing for the University of Kentucky.”
Lyles is a highly skilled big man and has been compared to Tim Duncan/Carlos Boozer mix. Lyles has excellent post skills and isn’t the typical high flyer but knows how to create leverage and hold his position. Lyles has a great jump hook and short jumpers and is an excellent rebounder who is physical. No matter who goes pro after this season Lyles will a big part of mix in 2014-2015.
In a year where Calipari and the Wildcats missed out on some big name guys and it seems that his stranglehold on the top players coming to play for him has shifted. Oddly Cal usually attracts guards but his success has gotten the best big men wanting to join the mix at Kentucky.
Lyles stated,” Coach Cal’s record with players like me and I want to be an all-star. he’s had a lot of guys that have been able to get to that stage.”
Lyles joins Karl Towns, Tyler Zulus, and Devin Booker in the Class of 2014.
