Lexington,KY- The second game of day two of the Kentucky Boy’s Sweet Sixteen had a story book finish. Lexington Catholic and Boyle County were featured in the second game of the morning session.
Lexington Catholic dominated the first 16 minutes but the Rebels fueled by a 38 point second half advance on to the quarterfinals with a score of 60-59. Boyle County’s #1 Jeramiah Bell poured in 25 and took player of the game honors. 12th region player of the year #23 Tyler Hagan had 18 points and 6 rebounds for the Rebels.
The Rebels won despite shooting 36.4%(20-55) from the field and 19% (4-21) from deep . The Rebels counterbalanced their poor shooting with 19 points off 13 Knight turnovers. The Rebels got to the line and often. They shot 61.5% on 26 attempts. The Rebels protected the ball with 4 turnovers.
The Knights went into the locker room with a 14 point edge, 36-22 by a stellar performance by Tanner Johnson’s 21 points. Johnson went cold in the second half and was not a factor in the last quarter of play.The Knights 50%(22-44) and 50%(6-12)from deep. Lexington Catholic shot 81.8% with 11 attempts.
Boyle County made a push in the third to cut the lead to 9, 47-38 after 24 minutes of action. The Rebels made a push with 3:45 remaining to cut the lead to 4,55-51. After exchanged buckets Lexington Catholic missed the front end of a 1 of 1 opportunity at the line gave the Rebels cut the lead to 1, 57-56 with a put back from Robbins. With 1:45 on the clock Bell converted from the charity stripe to give Boyle County its first lead leading to a Knights timeout. Boyle County went on a 20-10 run in six minutes and 42 seconds.
Lexington Catholic answered with a goal by Morris to give the Knights back the lead 59-58. A foul sent the Rebels to the line but couldn’t convert. The Knights gave them another opportunity, committing a turnover with 28.6 seconds remaining in the Barn Burner. With 3.4 seconds left the Rebels scored on a bucket by Bell. The Knights called a timeout to set up a miracle but was off the mark giving the Rebels the W.
Looking at the stats Boyle County should have lost but the team showed fight and kept chipping at the lead behind defense. Boyle County plays Ballard Friday night at 6:30.
