Eastern Kentucky University’s men’s golf team fired its best round of the event on Tuesday and finished 18th overall at the Kiawah Classic.
The three-day event was hosted by Charleston Southern University. The 21 teams competed at the par-72, 6,911-yard Turtle Point Golf Course on Kiawah Island, South Carolina.
After rounds of 316 and 301 on Sunday and Monday, the Colonels turned in a 4-under round of 284 on Tuesday to jump from 20th to 18th with a total of 901 (+37).
Newcomer Markus Lindgren led EKU’s strong round with a 3-under 69. He finished with a 54-hole total of 220 (+4) and tied for 49th overall.
Andreas Nielsen turned in a final round even-par 72 and tied for 70th overall with a total of 225 (+9). Willis Gaer shaved 12 strokes off his first two rounds to fire a 1-under 71 on Tuesday. He finished tied for 89th with a three-round total of 229 (+13).
No. 24 Auburn (833) won the team title by 15 strokes over the College of Charleston (848). The field also included No. 47 Memphis (865), which placed fifth. Eastern Kentucky finished five strokes behind 17th place Francis Marion (896) and one shot ahead of Presbyterian (902).
Eastern Kentucky has concluded the fall portion of the 2019-20 schedule. The Colonels will return to action on Feb. 17-18 at the President’s Day Match Play hosted by George Washington University at Weston Hills golf Club in Weston, Florida.
